The European Commission’s Directive on Data Protection went into effect in October 1998, and would prohibit the transfer of personal data to non-European Union nations that do not meet the European "adequacy" standard for privacy protection. The safe harbor -- approved by the EU in 2000 -- is an important way for U.S. companies to avoid experiencing interruptions in their business dealings with the EU or facing prosecution by European authorities under European privacy laws. Certifying to the safe harbor will assure that EU organizations know that your company provides adequate privacy protection, as defined by the Directive.
Data that is transmitted outside the European Union is subject to the standards of the Safe Harbor laws. This data is any information that is linked to a person’s name. Most often this falls in the realm of financial or human resource information and the sensitive nature of this information must be protected. RadiusPoint transmits data linked to a person’s name that is used in the processing for payment of Mobile invoices. This data consists of call detail, the calls that a person makes and receives from their wireless device. RadiusPoint uses this information to provide reports of number of calls, number of minutes used and various other reports that will help the employer determine the use of a mobile device for which the employer is paying the monthly fees.
Many employers are using RadiusPoint a Mobile Expense Management company or Telecom Expense Management (TEM) company to manage the monthly expenses that are being incurred by their employees. “This is an excellent way to cut down on the use of the mobile phones, because if users know that the calls and costs are being monitored, they will use less,” states Sharon Watkins, CEO of RadiusPoint. European companies have all of the same worries of mobile phone users than their counterparts in the U.S., and therefore need this type of management. Furthermore, the Safe Harbor certification will allow European companies to work with U.S. companies without the concern of the security of the data that is being transmitted.
RadiusPoint uses their proprietary software ExpenseLogic, to retrieve, audit and manage the data that is provided by the mobile vendors. Many manual steps that a company must take to verify the invoices accuracy and to allocate the cost of each user to a specific department can be automated by using ExpenseLogic. This automation allows the RadiusPoint staff to easily audit the data and manage the user’s calls and plans.
